On February 2, 2023, The Organic Agriculture Research, Development, and Extension Center (OARDEC) hosted a group of 40 students from Los Baños Senior High School as part of their educational program. This visit aimed to expose the students to innovative ideas for managing their demo farm and integrating agriculture into their academic subjects.
The students are actively involved in the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP), which helps address malnutrition among severely-wasted students. initiative hopes to improve academic performance,and promote school-based and home-based organic vegetable production. The students have been engaged in vermicomposting, planting, harvesting, and marketing of OA produce.
In addition, the school has established the LBSHS Organic Agriculture Society (LBSHS-OAS), with 101 members from Grade 11-12. This society seeks to foster students’ interest in agriculture and create a community that is passionate about sustainable farming practices.
The collaboration between Los Baños Senior High School and UPLB OARDEC reflects a shared commitment to empower students through agriculture. These initiatives do not only address nutritional concerns but also instill a sense of responsibility and interest in organic agriculture among the youth.
